Bedacht op de achterkant van een bierviltje in een kroeg in Zwolle, sinds vandaag bestempeld tot ‘Digitaal Erfgoed’ door de Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB). De website\u00a0letmestayforaday.com<\/a>\u00a0van de Zwolse oud-journalistiekstudent Ramon Stoppelenburg wordt voor altijd bewaard voor het nageslacht.<\/p>\n

De KB in Den Haag ziet het als haar taak om ook websites duurzaam te bewaren en raadpleegbaar te houden en ze te behoeden voor verlies. Daarom archiveert de KB websites die als verzameling een ‘representatief beeld geven van de Nederlandse cultuur, geschiedenis en samenleving op het internet’.<\/p>\n

,,Op veel van die websites staat unieke informatie”, zegt collectiespecialist Peter de Bode van het webarchief van de Koninklijke Bibliotheek. ,,Soms verdwijnen die websites als de eigenaar geen geld meer heeft om het overeind te houden. Of omdat de techniek is verouderd.”<\/p>\n

De site van Stoppelenburg is geselecteerd bij de aanleg van een speciale KB-collectie blogs.\u00a0,,Heel bijzonder”, vindt Stoppelenburg. Hij reageert via skype vanuit Phnomh Penh in Cambodja, waar hij sinds enkele jaren woont. ,,Wie had dat gedacht toen ik in 2001 met enkele vrienden aan de bar van studentencaf\u00e9 Het Vliegende Paard in Zwolle zes woorden op een viltje krabbelde? Ik hoor het een vriendin n\u00f3g zeggen: ‘Wie gaat jou nou uitnodigen?’.”<\/p>\n

Internationaal<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n

Het idee achter letmestayforaday.com was om meer van de wereld te zien. Destijds studeerde Stoppelenburg aan Hogeschool Windesheim journalistiek. Maar hij kwam op het idee door de Amerikaanse website sendmeadollar.com. ,,Ik hoefde geen geld, ik wilde reizen.” In ruil voor een overnachting of lift van adres A naar B zou hij op zijn website, \u00e9\u00e9n van de eerste weblogs, schrijven over zijn avonturen. Na de lancering van letmestayforaday.com kreeg hij uit de hele wereld vliegtickets en overnachtingen aangeboden, werd hij door de internationale media op de voet gevolgd en reisde hij twee jaar rond zonder een cent uit te geven.<\/p>\n

,,Ik dacht dat ik een paar jaar in Europa rond zou reizen”, kijkt Stoppelenburg terug. ,,Maar dat ik de halve wereld mocht rondreizen?” Met hulp van toerisme bureaus en gulle gevers (een dame uit Canada bood hem haar Airmiles aan: ‘Anders kom je nooit naar Canada’) reisde hij ook van adres tot adres door Zuid-Afrika, Australi\u00eb en dus Canada. Wereldwijd werden zijn belevenissen gevolgd en zo gauw duidelijk was dat hij een land zou bezoeken, stroomden de uitnodigingen binnen.<\/p>\n

Uniek<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Stoppelenburg vindt het vooral bijzonder dat zijn website nu ‘digitaal erfgoed’is, omdat zijn website engelstalig is. Dat maakt volgens De Bode echter niet uit: ,,Criteria om geselecteerd te worden, zijn dat de informatie op de website liefst uniek moet zijn, dat de site in Nederlands beheer moet zijn en dat het iets moet zeggen over de cultuur, geschiedenis en samenleving op internet.” De Bode was zelf ook ge\u00efntrigeerd door de website van Stoppelenburg: ,,Twee jaar gratis reizen, heel bijzonder.”<\/p>\n

10 miljoen websites<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

KB is al sinds 2007 bezig met een webarchief. ,,Inmiddels zijn er 13.400 websites geselecteerd, zegt De Bode. ,,Jaarlijks komen er 1.000 \u00e0 1.500 bij. In totaal zijn er 10 miljoen Nederlandse websites. Daar vallen ook websites met de extensies .com .eu .info onder. Van de .nl-extensies zijn er 5,8 miljoen.” Het archiveren gaat nog niet zo heel snel, zegt de archivaris. ,,Dat komt omdat het selecteren handmatig gebeurt, vervolgens de eigenaren gemaild moeten worden, die hebben vier weken de tijd om te weigeren. Daarna beginnen we automatisch te archiveren.”<\/p>\n

Vlogs<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

En niet iedere website is archiveerbaar. ,,Vlogs zijn voornamelijk beeldmateriaal wat niet te archiveren is. Ook omdat ze vaak op YouTube staat en dat kunnen wij niet archiveren.”<\/p>\n

Overigens wordt het archiveren soms ook vertraagd door de archivarissen zelf. ,,Ik moet eerlijk zeggen dat ik wel even op de website van Stoppelenburg ben blijven hangen ja. Dat gebeurt wel af en toe, als we iets bijzonders tegenkomen om te beoordelen.”<\/p>\n

Dat websites ‘digitaal erfgoed’ zijn, is internationaal erkend in het Unesco Charter on the Preservation of the Digital Heritage uit 2003. ,,Zij noemen het werelderfgoed”, zegt De Bode. ,,Wij beschouwen het als digitaal erfgoed’. We hebben vooral interesse in websites die dreigen offline te gaan.
